Through weeks of sketching and tracing over each others scanned sketches, we arrived on a design that featured a sweeping back panel. This became a signature element of the chair and serves as both a structural and decorative element. The long rabbet joint where the panel meets the rear leg provides torsional rigidity and allows for a thinner and more delicate stretcher system. It also makes a bold statement and gives the chair a unique look. We spent a lot of time thinking about how dining chairs are used and seen and we determined that they are most often seen from the back and pushed up to a table. Of course, when youre sitting in a chair you really aren’t seeing it anymore, youre feeling it and making judgements based upon its comfort. The play between the geometric shapes was the starting point for this design. This reconfiguration of an archetypal furniture form, allows for objects on it’s shelves to be displayed or hidden by way of a simple gesture, swinging the door from side to side. We had collaborated on projects before, but there was always an element of familiarity in either the typology or the material. Designing around a new material and process gave us the freedom to start fresh. We decided early on to make a series of vessels and after some though we arrived on the process of extruded ceramic. This process has been around for hundreds if not thousands of years, and is most commonly associated with the manufacture of bricks and honeycomb particle filters. Extrusion is the process of forcing a softened material through a die at high pressure that results in a profiled shape that can be trimmed to virtually any length. We wished to explore this process in the attempt to create a form that is only achievable through extrusion and settled on a beaded texture applied to a family of small vases. After completing his degree in 2006, Hallgeir went on to work for the much celebrated design studio Norway Says before opening his own design studio in 2009. Hallgeir has exhibited his work in London, Tokyo, Oslo, New York &amp; Milan. Among his clients are renowned Norwegian and international furniture manufacturers like Lexon, Muuto, L.K.Hjelle and Established &amp; Sons. Jonah Takagi Jonah Takagi received a BFA in Furniture Design from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2002. After several years of life on the road as a touring musician, Jonah launched his studio in 2010. He has exhibited work throughout Europe and America and counts among his clients such esteemed brands as Roll &amp; Hill, Matter, Kvadrat, La Chance, Ishinomaki Lab and Hem.
